Quad-horse Carousel in Carriage Trade in Second Life
The Carriage Trade Carousel is unique in Second Life. Instead of texture or prim horses, our Jumpers and Standers are actually provided by playful quad horse avatars!
The carousel was created with original texture work and with extensive sculptification providing the stretchers and carousel poles. The carousel is patterned from several original carousels from the Golden Age of the Carousel, in the early 20th century, with nods to such carousel styles as the Philadelphia style of Gutsva Dentzel’s Philadelphia Toboggan Company and the ‘Coney Island’ style of Charles Carmel, Marcus Charles Illions, Soloman Stein and Harry Goldstein.
Very few authentic wooden carousels from this time period are still in existence in the physical world. The carousel horses themselves are collector’s items, garnering tens of thousands of dollars for a well-preserved specimen in its original park paint. As a result, historic carousels are often broken apart and sold for their components rather than as an entire machine.
Our carousel is reminescent of these gorgeous machines, and features carousel music Blaze Away, courtesy of Roger Wiegland. Mr. Wiegland graciously gave us permission to use a piece of music he recorded on his carousel organ, the Diamond Jubilee, an 89-key Gaviol steam organ. To ride the carousel, simply select the ball or post of your choice. Horses have poses in the posts; humans have poses in the balls and carriages. Right click on the ball or post of your choice and select ride. Click the carousel to start the ride!
